Is your business not attracting enough customers, or attracting the wrong type?

The Empathy Map.... The Empathy map was introduced to me in a session i had with the Women's Business Station. I felt it was an amazing tool in really bringing clarity to working out who your ideal customer is. I worked on this in a consulting session with my client recently, and we really got into the nitty gritty of where my client wanted to head with her business vision. So... what's the benefit of spending time on creating all this information? Example - So you decide to set up a business, (or are already in business) you are trying to sell your product or service, and gain as many customers as possible. So you advertise your business, send out e-mails, network, make phone calls, do social media boosted posts, send out leaflets etc.. you try every possible avenue you can to reach as many potential customers you can.. SO... how many hours are spent trying to reach all of these potential customers, of whom the vast majority don't buy?. The BENEFIT of working on the Emp

Is the thought of recording your income and expenses giving you the dread??

How much time do you spend thinking, worrying about, putting off, or begrudgingly recording your income and expenses?. Put a number of hours on it....... Now calculate how much in money terms that actually costs you (based on what you could be doing with that time to make money), and consider how much of a drain it has on your well being.. it takes a lot of energy dreading something does it not. Now ask yourself this - IS IT WORTH IT? Maintaining your books is part and parcel of running a business, however when you envisaged creating a business, i bet it wasn't a part of the business that you looked forward to, or even thought about. The amount of business owners we speak to, that hate this side of their business, or bury their head in the sand and ignore all existence of that stack of papers in the corner piling up is unbelievable. Why do you torture yourself? Why do you burden yourself with the dread that comes alongside doing it yourself?. I bet i know your answer alr

Has your business dream, turned into a nightmare?

The first businesses i started, i had a vision that i would just set it up, create the online presence, and the enquiries would start rolling in! Boy was i wrong, i imagined with rose coloured spectacles what it would be like, and got a rude awakening. It took 6 months before the work started trickling in, and that 6 months was filled with a huge amount of perseverance, long hours, lots of.. "we will keep you in mind", and waiting on the phone ringing!. So much admin, marketing, setting everything up, endless phone calls and e-mails.. and just believing that at some point, it would all be worth it. So trust me when i say... i have been there. It is stressful, and it wears you down and you do see more money going out than you have coming in. But if you believe that you can make it work, it will. As an accountant, i was able to use my expertise and knowledge of business throughout the process. I know that most businesses don't make a profit in there first few year

Are you too Embarrassed to take on a bookkeeper?

Are you too Embarrassed to take on a bookkeeper? As a sociable person, i love speaking to people. Part of my business is building up a relationship with my clients, i love listening almost as much as i love talking 😂. It's amazing what you find out, just by allowing people to speak freely. My intention is always to make people feel at ease. To allow them to communicate their worries, and open up about how they feel in their business. I'm very much a fixer, my brain immediately starts working on all the possibilities, what i can say to be able to put that person's mind at ease.. other than.. it's ok, we can work through this.  There are many things i hear when i first speak to potential clients. One of the most prominent worries i hear, is from clients stating that they are worried about the state of their filing system (or lack thereof 😓). My first thought is that who am i to judge? That isn't my place, as an accountant i am here to provide

Relaxing into Business - Tackling Turbulence Together

"If you’re starting something on your own, you better have a passion for it, because this is hard work." -Sallie Krawcheck, Co-founder of Ellevest Most of my client meetings are held from coffee shops. I feel it creates that relaxed and informal feel. Enabling me to connect with and build relationships with my clients. I love hearing about what's been happening with their business, and become transfixed with the highs and lows of their journey, over a cup of freshly brewed coffee. As I listen to people speak with passion, excitement, positivity and expectation, I become so personally invested in supporting them through the maze that is running a business. Sometimes i hear disdain, exhaustion and defeatism, as the trials and tribulations become overwhelming. Running a business can be likened to riding an emotional roller coaster. Sometimes you feel like you are on top of, and taking over the world. The sky's the limit, there are no boundaries to your reach.
